Basic Dermatology Curriculum (All Modules)-Local Anesthesia Video

Video Transcription

Video Summary

Local anesthesia is crucial in dermatologic procedures to numb the skin. Topical anesthetics like lidocaine provide superficial numbing, while deeper procedures require injectable anesthetics like lidocaine, administered intradermally or subcutaneously. Intradermal injections, inserted at a 15-degree angle, allow quick action with a visible wheal, whereas subcutaneous injections, placed at a 45-degree angle, are deeper and less painful. Epinephrine may be added for prolonged effect and reduced bleeding. Alternatives like procaine are used for allergies. Techniques like using ice packs or buffering with sodium bicarbonate can minimize injection discomfort.
