Welcome, everybody, to the AAD board-style quiz question writing course. My name is Eric Stratman. I'm the former chair of the Council on Education at the AAD, former president of the American Board of Dermatology, and lifelong educator. Dermatology education is a real career interest of mine. I've been writing board-style questions since around 2005, when I joined the question-writing team at the American Board of Dermatology, and I continue to write questions today. I've learned a lot about the process over time and hope to share some of the do's and don'ts with you over our ensuing time ahead. Now, I have a disclosure that I am currently a paid employee of the American Board of Dermatology, which serves as the assessment and certifying body for the majority of board-certified dermatologists in the United States. And that by you improving the quality of your question writing at the American Academy of Dermatology, or any other organization that you're working with, it actually helps the American Board of Dermatology because it promotes a higher-quality continuing certification self-assessment system, and also serves the needs of the American Board of Dermatology by growing the competent people out there that are able to write questions. And I can tell you that when I first began as a question writer, I had a lot to learn. And even to this day, when I write questions, I still get my questions heavily edited also. And I think it's a really great process when you can learn how to write good questions. It will really help you as well. So our objectives. The objectives of this activity, I want you to be able to identify by the end the anatomy of a board-style question. I'd like for you to be able to construct a well-written board-style question, identify elements of a well-composed clinical photo, describe the common errors in board-style question construction, and identify elements that make a question problematic. So let's get started.
