Course Description
This online course has been created with one goal in mind, to help you understand the basic fundamentals of coding for dermatology. Just as you learn the practice of medicine, you must also learn the practice of appropriate coding.

You may be asking yourself, why is coding important and why should I invest some time in learning it? Coding is what enables you to adequately describe the physician-patient encounter through a series of widely used conventions. These conventions allow you to receive reimbursement for the claims you submit to private payers or a governmental agency such as Medicare.

Coding tells a detailed story of what happened during an encounter- what procedures were performed and why the service was performed.

In order to accurately capture the physician-patient encounter, it is essential to understand the coding guidelines necessary to narrate the story of the encounter. This course tackles clinical concepts and key elements needed to adequately code and document the physician-patient encounter. Coding adequately and in a timely manner ensures your practice’s revenue cycle is healthy and stable.

As you advance through the course, you will find that lessons are designed to boost your knowledge in key areas of procedural and diagnostic coding as well as governmental national correct coding initiatives. One key design element of this course that makes it appealing is that you are able to set your own pace, start with any lesson, and advance at your leisure.

• Recall the history of medical coding.
• Differentiate and recognize the purpose of each of the code sets.
• Recognize how ICD-10-CM and CPT codes combine to describe the services rendered.
• Demonstrate the appropriate application of modifiers.
• Illustrate how complete and concise documentation allows for accurate coding.
• Select and report the correct ICD-10-CM and CPT code based on services performed and documented in the medical record.
• Explain how Local and National Coverage Determinations can be used to meet payer expectations.
• Identify the impact of National Correct Coding Initiatives that pertain to your claim.
